In order to strenghten tolerance by fostering mutual understanding among cultures and peoples, in 1996 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed November, 16 the Interantional Tolerance Day. A campaign to promote tolerance, respect and diginty for all the people all around the world has been initiated by the UN. TOGETHER global campaign focuses on reducing the negative perception of migrants and refugees as well as hostile attitiude towards them. The aim is to improve the social connection between host countries and communities, and migrants and refugees.
The United Nations Year for Tolerance and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi gave birth to a prize which promotes tolerance and non-violence. and has been created by UNESCO in 1995. The UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence rewards important activities such fields as culture, science, communication or art. Institutions, organizations or persons who have contributed in a particularly meritorious and effective manner to tolerance and non-violence are the target groups. Federal Research and Methodological Center for Tolerance Psychology and Education (Tolerance Center) of Russia was the winner in 2016.
The prize is awarded every two years on the International Day for Tolerance, 16 November.
